KT SAT commended by the Ministery of Future for its Satellite ‘Fisheries Monitoring System’

• Real-time monitoring of deep-sea vessels using satellite M2M (Machine to Machine)

• Will bring a positive influence on the final evaluation of Korea’s illegal fishing country status.

KT SAT’s fisheries monitoring system that prevents illegal fishing of deep-sea vessels using satellite is to receive a commendation by the Minister of Future in ‘Korea’s ICT Innovation Award.’ Its fisheries monitoring system for deep-sea vessels is based on satellite M2M (Machine to Machine). It monitors the location, speed, and track of ships in real-time, detects suspicious ships, and sends automatic alerts.

The need for the system came to the fore when Korea was designated as a pre-illegal fishing country by the U.S. and EU in January and November 2013 respectively. KT SAT’s performed all works related to system development including but not limited to: adopting and building fisheries monitoring equipment;

building fisheries monitoring system; and developing the base of fisheries monitoring center.

Thanks to the development of system, the EU notified in June that its designation of Korea as an illegal fishing country was postponed. Korea also received a positive evaluation on the U.S. pre-judgment report, expecting to have a positive result on the final evaluation of illegal fishing country designation that is to be held in January next year.

KT SAT finished developing and installing this system within 40 days, the shortest period of time, with the technology in Korea by shortening the system development period that usually takes 3~6 months. It was acclaimed by the EU and U.S. on-site survey teams with its high data communication safety compared to similar services in Korea. KT SAT plans to apply for a patent for this system in both Korea and abroad and is also preparing for its overseas export.

KT SAT’s President Jaegook Song said “The fisheries monitoring system using satellite is a smart satellite ICT that enhanced Korea’s national dignity. We will also take the lead in generating added value using satellite from now on.”
