Optimal satellite communication solution for maritime safety

• KT SAT participated in ‘Korea Maritime Safety Expo 2015’ held by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Busan

• Displayed high quality satellite solutions such as fisheries monitoring system and satellite LTE

KT SAT (CEO Jaegook Song) said it will participate in ‘Korea Maritime Safety Expo 2015’ that is held in Busan BEXCO by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Busan for 4 days from 27th to 30th.

KT SAT will set up its own exhibition booth in the first exhibition hall of BEXCO, presenting satellite communication solutions that are receiving attention as a wild and maritime communication means enabling communication anywhere in the world.

During the exhibition, KT SAT will carry out service demonstration and customer counselling for visitors to directly experience the solutions. A demonstration of ‘fisheries monitoring system’, which led to the lifting of EU’s designation of Korea as an illegal fishing country, on ships and land will be conducted.

The ‘fisheries monitoring system’ tracks the location of deep-sea vessels in real-time through the satellite equipment connected to each ship and immediately sends an alarm when it detects ships fishing in illegal fishing areas. Recognized for contributing to the national economy by enhancing Korea’s national dignity and helping Korea avoid sanctions of ban on marine product imports, the system received a Minister’s commendation from ‘2014 Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning ICT Innovation Award.’

Moreover, KT SAT will present ‘satellite LTE’ that enables the use of satellite network through regular cell phones on deep-sea vessels. Satellite LTE is used by converting signals sent from satellite antenna to LTE/3G and connecting them to micro base stations (Femtocell) without wireless network. Satellite LTE can be accessed from the existing cell phone and rate system without an additional device, and is thus actively used on fishery inspection boats and submarine cable maintenance ships.

In addition, KT SAT will showcase ‘fisheries video monitoring system’, which has combined kt Telecop’s CCTV technology to the existing ‘fisheries monitoring system’ to monitor the fishing activities of deep-sea vessels and allow the size, volume, and weight of fishing species to be checked in real-time. KT SAT will also display satellite LTE service such as a ‘pre-paid phone card for ships’ that allows crew to freely have voice and video phone calls with the land through satellite network, to enhance the welfare of crew on deep-sea vessels.

KT SAT’s CEO Jaegook Song said that “The ‘oceans’ are highly important for Korea because it is surrounded by the seas on three sides, thus making a maritime communication means required to guarantee safety. We will contribute to the improvement of national image through a satellite solution optimized for maritime communication.”
